Every two years the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) holds a national conference in Australia or New Zealand. The ALA is the peak professional organisation in Australasia representing clinicians, educators and researchers in the field of lymphology. The ALA Conference 2012, in Cairns on 24 – 26 May 2012 promises to be an engaging and exciting event, featuring highly regarded keynote speakers and presenters from all over the world. This Conference will leave us richer in knowledge, invigorated through participation and expanded in friendships and contacts.

Professor Peter MortimerProfessor Peter Mortimer

International Speaker and keynote speaker for the ALA Conference
Professor Peter Mortimer trained in Dermatology in Sheffield and Oxford. He was appointed ‘Physician to the Skin’ department at St George’s and consultant skin physician to the Royal Marsden Hospital since 1986 and has been Professor of Dermatological Medicine to the University of London since 2000.


Annette LoudonAnnette Loudon

Annette is currently completing her Masters of Medical Sciences through Rural Health at the University of Tasmania. Her research topic “A randomised controlled pilot trial into the effects of yoga on women with secondary arm lymphoedema from breast cancer treatment” was carried out in Hobart and Launceston. Annette is a qualified, accredited and experienced teacher of yoga and Pilates, as well as having qualifications in exercise science and fitness.


Rachel DawsonRachel Dawson

Rachel Dawson is a dietitian and a student of the Graduate Entry Medical Program at Flinders University. Rachel has interests in improving outcomes for patients with breast cancer related lymphoedema by using conservative interventions which can be patient driven. She has been involved in research which critically evaluates the credibility of information recommended to patients on the internet. Through her background in nutrition and dietetics she has made contributions to research in how dietary changes can enhance outcomes for patients with breast cancer related lymphoedema.

How to apply for funding

The Conference Committee are pleased to be able to offer some assistance to Consumers and their carers to attend the Conference on Saturday 26 May 2012 for the Consumer dedicated sessions. This assistance has been made possible by a Commonwealth Grant. To allocate this assistance to consumers a grant application process has been agreed on.

A Conference 2012 Grants Committee has been established to assess each Grant application taking into account the funding available. Grants are made to assist with costs for attendance at the Conference. Grants will be assigned to applicants based on fulfilment of certain conditions on the Conference delegates behalf, which form the selection criteria below:

  1. Grants will be made to applicants who can demonstrate that their attendance at the Conference will benefit them and/or others.
  2. Priority will be given to applicants who would not normally have the ability to attend such a Conference.
  3. Priority will be given to applicants who are members of a lymphoedema association (if available in their state/country).
  4. Applicants will need to have a willingness to provide public comment of their experience.
